History and Location:
The Hall, which is Grade II* Listed and originally owned by St. Mary Steps Church, was built as a Sunday school in 1892 on the site of a pair of 17th century houses which had been church property for a very long time. We understand that The Hall has not functioned as a Sunday school or public building of any sort since 1939 when it was used to store the church organ and church property.

Since the mid 1950's The Hall had been used by a local theatre group as a green room, storage of scenery and a place in which to paint and build props.

Stepcote Hill is the ancient entrance to Exeter from the West, just within The Westgate, the scene of battles and many kings and important people entering the walled city - i.e. King William III (William of Orange), in 1688 rode a white horse in the gate and up Stepcote Hill and received a great welcome before riding on to London.

The area of West Street and St. Mary steps is much visited currently by visitors attracted by the old buildings and coming to see The Automaton Clock called ‘Matthew The Miller’ which dates from the 1620's and moves on the hour. On yet another interesting historical note, archaeological plans of Exeter show a roman road going under "The Hall".

Directions:
Travelling from the city centre proceed down Fore Street and take the last turning on your left into West Street. Drop down the hill and you can park in the allocated 'Pay and Display' parking area found at the bottom off Stepcote Hill in front of the House That Moved.
